Well originally I was planning to use this race as training for the London Marathon, but as race day approached the weather forecasts were just PERFECT! 2 friends and I decided to GO FOR IT and go out with the 3:25 pacer Steve! This felt VERY intimidating at the start line but as soon as we started running I felt fine. We started out at a great pace a little faster than our goal bu I tried not to let it scare me and relied on our pacer to make sure we were not going too fast. The loop around the park was great as it was sheltered but once we started heading north the wind was pretty tough. I felt like I was struggling to keep up with the pace goup but as soon as we dropped back even a little bit it was harder to run in that wind..so Denise and I pushed to keep in the little pack.
The turnaround loop was about mile 15.5 and I felt OK and then as soon as we turned around that wind was behind us... and it felt MUCH better! I fell a little bit behind the pacer but I could still see him. Another girl from the pace group (Monica) was next to me, and my running partner right behind us. Monica had a friend that had run the half and then caught a cab up to come and find her. He was offering us water or GU. Suddenly I looked at my watch and realized it was mile 23 and we had slowed down a bit for that last mile. I felt OK and I knew that I only had 3 miles to go so I tried to get back on a pace. Mile 23 I managed to pick it up to my goal pace of 7:40 something and I dropped Monica. My friend Jeff appeared out of nowhere and was running along side me, saying I was doing OK and was going to be under 3:30.. I was so excited. I could not believe I was really doing it! I crossed the finish line with a 6 MINUTE PR!! First in my age group. Denise finished right behind me and got first place female Masters! We stayed at the finishline dancing to the band music and collected our awards! The finish area was so happy, with the great weather many peope had achieved PR's. A great race! Next stop London!
